Pre Lessons

Before you can take lessons, you will need to apply for your provisional licence. The forms are available from the Post Office.

The driving test is taken in two parts - the theory test and the practical test.

The theory test consists of 50 multiple choice questions, a number of these questions forming a case study, together with the Hazard Perception Test consisting of video clips of real driving situations containing potential and actual hazards.

Although the theory of driving will be covered during the lessons, you will need to do your own individual study using the Highway Code and a theory book to enable you to learn the rules of the road.  For the Hazard Perception test you can buy books, CDs or DVDs.  These are also available to borrow from the library.

Once you have successfully passed the theory test, the next stage is the practical driving test. This test lasts for approximately 40 minutes during which time you will be expected to carry out one manoeuvre and around 10 minutes of independent driving where the Examiner will either ask you to follow road signs to a particular destination, or show you a diagram of a short route he will ask you to follow, all the time demonstrating to him that you are aware of the correct way to drive for the conditions. The Examiner will expect you to demonstrate capable, intelligent and safe driving skills.
